DRK Beauty
Capicua and DRK Beauty built a digital platform that connects BIPOC communities with clinicians to make free and subsidized mental health care accessible.
Context

DRK Beauty Healing is a non-profit organization focused on mental healthcare for women and non-binary individuals from Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and South and East Asian communities. It was founded by Wilma Mae Basta, who, after experiencing depression and hospitalization, recognized that mainstream mental health support services often do not consider cultural and spiritual needs.

Basta created DRK to integrate clinical and spiritual therapy for mental health issues, addressing the unique healing complexities of BIPOC communities. DRK launched in May 2020 in response to the worsening mental health crises exacerbated by COVID-19.

Today, DRK operates a network of over 130 responsive clinicians, has provided more than 2,000 hours of free therapy, and has assisted over 300 people of color across America in accessing treatment for mental health issues they might not otherwise have received.

Problem

DRK needed to serve people seeking mental health care services, many of whom were navigating emotional vulnerability, and clinicians who needed a professional environment to manage credentials and availability.

The end-user experience had to be warm while showing available services, payment options, and how to connect with a clinician who understood their context. Clinicians required secure login, structured credential submission, and staff-facing reviews.

Solution

Capicua delivered the UX/UI design and development for the DRK platform, starting with wireframing in Figma to define the experience. With validated user flows, we built the platform on WordPress, giving DRK the flexibility and maintainability a non-profit needs.

We designed dual user pathways: one for people seeking therapy mental health, with clear navigation to services, pricing, and clinician availability; and one for clinicians, with a secure login and structured onboarding form for credential submission. DRK staff can also access submitted credentials, verify them, and manage the clinician network from the admin side

The visual design was intentional and considered, warm, human, and grounded in the emotional reality of the people DRK serves. Every design decision reinforced the message that this was a space built for them.

  • Design: Full UX/UI design process using Figma, from wireframes to final UI.
  • Development: WordPress development with custom login flows for clients and clinicians.
  • User Journeys: Dual user pathway: therapy-seekers (public) and clinicians (secure portal).
  • Presentation: Clear presentation of free, subsidized, and paid therapy access options.
  • Security: Credential submission and staff review workflow for clinician vetting.
Success

Capicua provided DRK with the digital infrastructure it needed to scale its network and impact. With a professional, trustworthy online presence, DRK has onboarded more clinicians, reached more people in need, and communicated its mission with clarity.

The dual user experience resolved a complex design challenge: making one platform feel right for two radically different audiences. Users seeking mental health therapy services find a calm, supportive entry point; clinicians find a professional, efficient onboarding. The platform works: over 300 people of color across America have accessed care through DR, with 2,000+ hours of free and accessible therapy delivered through a system built by Capicua.

  • Services: The platform supports a network of 130+ vetted clinicians across the US.
  • Outcomes: 2,000+ hours of free therapy delivered to BIPOC communities.
  • Community: 300+ individuals across America are being helped through the platform.
  • Experience: Dual UX resolved the challenge of serving therapy-seekers and clinicians.
  • Architecture: Non-profit-friendly WordPress architecture ensures maintainability.

Some projects are more than products, especially when building something that has to work for people whose trust is hard to earn and is essential. With Shaped Clarity, we blend design thinking and technical engineering to go from product to impact. Let's talk.
