Common Ground
Connection-Based Products & Communities
Hawaii is a living laboratory for sustainable living and community-centered economies. On Kauai's north shore, Common Ground serves as a space where these values thrive, blending art, technology, and innovative thinkers.
As a mission-driven marketplace, it connects producers, consumers, and changemakers through food, promoting healing and community formation. The platform hosts impactful events and encourages a shift toward regenerative systems and local consumption.
Common Ground stands out as a community-driven initiative with strong ties to place, culture, and ecology, envisioning technology as a beneficial force for its communities.
Common Ground had a compelling vision, but translating it into a digital product was complex. A marketplace needs to balance transactional functionality with the community experience, and for Common Ground, the experience dimension was non-negotiable.
The platform had to feel as alive and intentional as the physical spaces it represented, yet the technical challenge involved building a light, performant, and secure platform capable of hosting both marketplace transactions and content-rich community programming.
Common Ground's ecosystem also needed to support Shopify-powered commerce without sacrificing the community-forward character that distinguished it from generic e-commerce.
There was also the question of identity: the platform needed to communicate a specific philosophy without defaulting to generic green-branding tropes. Every design and technology choice had to reinforce the mission.

Capicua built Common Ground's platform on Gatsby with a Prismic headless CMS, creating a Jamstack architecture that focused on performance, security, and content flexibility. The Emotion CSS-in-JavaScript library was used to ensure consistency and reusability.
We integrated Shopify's eCommerce solutions to power the marketplace layer, giving a robust transactional backbone while keeping the experience front and center. Reusable components allowed the content team to evolve without constant developer involvement.
Beyond the build, we took a holistic approach to the ecosystem, designing the full user journey, ensuring that visitors moving between events, products, and community content experienced a seamless, coherent world rather than disconnected pages.
- Architecture: Gatsby + Prismic headless CMS (Jamstack architecture).
- Reusability: Emotion CSS-in-JavaScript for consistent, reusable styling.
- Integrations: Shopify eCommerce integration for marketplace transactions.
- Experience: Full experience design across the marketplace and community.
- Composability: Reusable component system for team autonomy

Common Ground launched with a platform that authentically represented its mission. The Jamstack architecture delivered fast load times and high security, while Prismic's flexible CMS gave the team the tools to manage content with confidence.
The Shopify integration created a smooth experience that supported local producers and connected buyers to the regenerative food ecosystem Common Ground champions. The result was a marketplace that felt as community-centered as the physical space it extended.
The platform has become a meaningful expression of Common Ground's vision, proving that technology built with intention can reinforce rather than dilute a mission-driven brand.
- Autonomy: Content team autonomy through Prismic CMS
- Security: Launched a performant, secure Jamstack marketplace platform
- E-Commerce: Shopify-powered commerce supporting local producers
