Wurrly
The Education Technology Platform to Learn with Music
Wurrly is a music education technology platform for K-12 students and teachers that ensures a safe environment for recording vocal performances, receiving feedback, and tracking progress. It also equips educators with tools to manage assignments and monitor growth in both in-person and remote settings.
Historically, music education has been overlooked by edtech, with most tools focusing on core subjects. Wurrly addresses this gap with a dedicated platform for school music programs, thriving at the intersection of performing arts education and digital learning, especially after the shift to remote schooling.
Creating a music education app for children involves unique challenges, such as strict COPPA compliance and school procurement requirements. The app must cater to a diverse age range, from 6-year-olds learning pitch to 17-year-olds preparing audition recordings.
Before Capicua's involvement, the platform needed to transform into a viable product for schools, featuring an engaging, safe user experience for students, intuitive design for teachers, and reliability for classroom use. Balancing complexity for older students and simplicity for younger ones was crucial to maintain educator trust, requiring thorough research, thoughtful UX design, and a focus on reliability over flair.

Capicua collaborated with Wurrly on product design and development to enhance platform functionality and polish for schools. Our work included UX research, interface design, and full-stack development, creating seamless experiences for both students and teachers. We designed tailored interfaces that make core actions like recording and assessing effortless. The student interface is engaging but not distracting, while the teacher dashboard provides valuable data without being overwhelming.
At a technical level, we built a scalable architecture for audio recording and storage that meets the privacy and security standards of educational institutions. The result is a trusted product that students enjoy using. At a technical level, we combined TypeScript, React, Node and GraphQL with three Hasura and Remote Schema services to develop, produce and stage the platform for the AWS cluster. We added S3 static pages for front-end buckets, PostgreSQL databases, Docker Containerization, and three DB instances for its DBMS: Dev (T3 micro), Stage (T3 small), and Prod (T3 medium). The result is a scalable architecture for audio recording and storage that meets the privacy standards and a product that students enjoy using.
