GenAI To Help Users With Inflammatory Arthritis
According to the NIH, inflammatory arthritis affects over 53 million Americans aged 18 and older. While treatments can address individual flare-ups, there is no universal cure, which leads to chronic unpredictability and a struggle with long-term management.
Caitlin West, who has lived with inflammatory arthritis her entire life, founded 4alivio to empower patients to understand their disease and provide physicians with crucial data for better care.
The name 4alivio reflects the four core therapy types for inflammatory arthritis: TENS, PEMF, Infrared Light Therapy, and Hot/Cold Therapy. Over time, the platform evolved into a GenAI-driven platform that connects patient experiences with clinical insights.
People with inflammatory arthritis have to manage a complex web of variables that can influence the likelihood of a flare-up, such as weather conditions, sleep patterns, medication schedules, and physical activity.
Without a structured way to capture data over time, patients arrive at appointments with anecdotal memory and not measurable evidence, limiting what doctors can do.
West's original concept involved a hardware patch for administering targeted therapy, but while innovative, it required significant infrastructure and time that didn't align with the urgency of the problem.
4alivio demanded a more scalable, software-first solution that could deliver immediate value while building toward a longer-term vision. The project also lacked a cohesive visual identity and brand system. As it prepared to work with medical centers and clinicians, it needed to look as credible and calm as the care it was trying to deliver.

Capicua partnered with 4alivio to design and build a mobion. We connected the app to weather-tracking APIs to automatically correlate external conditions, including temperature and humidity, with user-reported flare-ups, surfacing otherwise invisible patterns.
We integrated AI to identify flare-up tendencies using accumulated user data, enabling the platform to shift from reactive logging to proactive prediction. Users can check in on flare-up events and add context about the circumstances, while the system builds an increasingly accurate model of their individual triggers over time.
Beyond functionality, Capicua redesigned 4alivio's visual identity from the ground up, building a brand that conveys calmness and clinical credibility without feeling cold. We delivered brand guidelines, mobile app UI for both iOS and Android, and web and admin panels for medical center partners.
- Development: Mobile app development for iOS and Android.
- Integrations: Weather API integration for environmental correlation analysis.
- Alerting: AI-powered flare-up tendency detection and proactive alerts.
- Identity: Complete visual identity redesign: logo, palette, brand guidelines.
- Admin: Web and admin panels for medical center and clinician-accessible applications.

4alivio now gives clinicians across the US access to rich patient data, enabling them to transform subjective conversations into data-informed consultations. By focusing on GenAI-based data collection and pattern recognition, 4alivio was able to move faster and build a product that works immediately for users, with a clear path toward more sophisticated interventions over time.
Today, 4alivio's ability to predict flare-ups represents a fundamental shift in how patients with chronic inflammatory conditions manage their health. Building a health product that has to earn the trust of both patients and clinicians is one of the hardest design challenges in tech. With Shaped Clarity™, Capicua does it every day. If your vision sits at the intersection of care, data, and experience, let's talk.
- Deployment: Deployed across the US for individual patients and clinical partners.
- Data-driven: Physicians use patient-generated data to tailor long-term treatment plans.
- Prediction: AI prediction model enables proactive, not just reactive, health management.
- Credibility: A new visual identity that supports credibility with medical center partners.
- Scalability: Transformed a hardware-first concept into a scalable, high-impact software platform.
