Context

FaceMyDoc is a telehealth platform that connects patients with specialized health professionals across the U.S. Unlike standard urgent care services, the innovative medical platform focuses on ongoing, relationship-based care. Patients can filter specialists by city, state, and insurance, while physicians have tools to enhance their practices.

Combining elements of an Independent Physician Association and a Managed Service Organization, FaceMyDoc offers on-demand services and virtual clinic solutions tailored to specific patient populations. Positioned before COVID-19 made telehealth mainstream, it quickly became the fastest-growing network of accessible healthcare technology providers in the U.S. during the pandemic.

Problem

Scaling a healthcare technology platform during a global health crisis is a significant engineering challenge. FaceMyDoc needed to rapidly enhance its services as COVID-19 transformed patient behavior, provider workflows, and regulatory expectations. While speed was essential, it was also about precision, security, and trust. 

The platform manages highly sensitive data, including medical histories, video consultations, and insurance information. Every integration and data pathway had to comply with HIPAA standards, which necessitated careful architectural decisions throughout. FaceMyDoc also needed to serve patients of all ages and technical backgrounds, as well as health professionals who needed efficient, professional-grade tooling.

Solution

Capicua partnered with FaceMyDoc to upgrade and extend the patient care platform's capabilities across both design and engineering. On the technology side, we built on a React, Node, and Next.js stack to enable fast development cycles and a performant, dynamic front-end experience at scale.

Regarding integrations, we combined TokBox for HIPAA-compliant video consultations, Atlantic's HIPAA compliance framework for handling electronically protected health data, and Cogsworth's scheduling system for transparent, secure appointment management. Every component of the patient care platform was chosen to work well together, reducing integration risk and ensuring the platform operated reliably across its full workflow.

Since FaceMyDoc manages a significant volume of sensitive data across patients, providers, appointments, and billing, the information architecture work was substantial as well. We designed and built an IA that made complexity navigable, delivering intuitive interfaces while maintaining the confidentiality and security that a physician patient platform demands.
