Context

The creator economy has flourished over the past decade, yet platforms have captured most of the value, leaving creators at the mercy of algorithms and unfavorable terms. 

Showcast, launched in December 2020, offers a solution by allowing creators to host live events on their own terms, from talk shows to masterclasses. Creators set their own pricing, and Showcast takes only a small cut of ticket sales, aligning its success with creators'. The timing was crucial, as COVID-19 increased demand for digital content and alternatives for creators and audiences alike.

Problem

The Showcast team arrived at Capicua with a clear product vision but required comprehensive technical and strategic execution. Developing a live-streaming events platform with payments, subscriptions, notifications, and mobile access posed significant challenges, especially in achieving a polished creator experience from the outset. 

Additionally, product-market fit was crucial, as Showcast needed a system tailored to the unique behaviors of creators and their audiences, with a focus on flexible monetization, community features, and non-algorithmic content discovery. A beta had to launch quickly to validate the model, along with plans for a native iOS app and web presence to document progress and engage early creator partners.

Solution

Capicua developed the complete technical stack for Showcast, using React Native for mobile and Node.js for the back end. We utilized MongoDB for data storage, MUX for video streaming, and AWS for notifications. Payments were managed through Stripe, enabling both pay-per-view and subscription models. 

We created a framework for creators to organize content into shows and events, giving them control over packaging and pricing. We launched a beta, a full iOS app, and a public website to drive creator acquisition and educate audiences, ensuring the platform's features aligned with the needs of working creators.
